Training Your Dog
Not To Bark
A dog barking out of control is not only a
total nuisance, it can actually cost you in fines
depending on where you live, not to mention you can be
evicted from your place and become enemy with your
neighbors who have no peace.
One of the highest priorities as a dog
owner, (up there with using a pooper-scooper!) is
training your dog not to bark. All dogs get a
bad rap from those into incessant barking.
Dogs bark for many reasons. They bark when
they are happy to see you, they bark when they defend their
territory, they bark as a warning if something/someone is
coming near, out of anxiety, boredom, loneliness and
unhappiness.
Some breeds are also more prone to barking
and howling. I was immensely pleased when my neighbor moved and
took their Beagle along! Every time they left the house, the
dog howled non-stop. Probably from some form of separation
anxiety. I was howling too...
That said, dogs are dogs and as such they do
bark. It is unreasonable to expect your dog to never bark at
all. However,,, chances are you may have inadvertently
trained your dog to bark.
Dogs operate from cause and effect. "I bark
and she opens the door" "I bark and I get attention" (even if
it is negative attention) Your dog comes to you and goes
"whoff!" and you'll get up from your chair to see what she
wants... the conclusion is crystal clear: "I bark and I get
what I want/get attention/get some kind of action"
If your dog is barking out of loneliness or
inactivity, you need to address that first. Increasing your
walks will not only be mentally stimulating it is also stress
relieving and will help to assure your dog will rest while you
are gone. Spend more time with your dog and give her more
attention.
Enrolling in an obedience class, or learn to
do it on your own, will not only stop the barking, but the bond
between the two of you will both deepen and strengthen. We
would suggest starting with this 6 day ecourse. You will get
some real insights and tips on how you can train your dog. The
best part is that it is free!
Training your dog not to bark
incessantly means an end to your frustration, and her anxiety
that you are not pleased with her. Not to mention your
neighbors will accept you again too
