Types
of Portable Dog Pens: Which One’s Right for Your
Dog?
Portable dog pens give you a way to let your
pooch romp around in the fresh air without your having to
worry about it running off getting into trouble the second
you turn your back.
There are two basic types of portable pens, but there are a
lot of variations on those types, so you can easily find one
that’s right for your dog.
Modular pens Modular dog
pens are comprised of wire mesh walls that link together. For
most pens, you’ll only need a pair of pliers if you need any
tools at all. These pens are easy to move because you can
simply take apart the walls, stack them flat, and carry them
off.
Another convenient thing about these pens is
that you can choose which shape to set them up in (square or
rectangle), so they fit in awkward spaces.
Lightweight pens
These are ideal for large dogs that will be using the pen
mostly at home. While some of these portable dog pens can’t be
completely disassembled, many can be folded down for easier
transportation. These pens are typically made of heavy gauge
wire or tough plastic.
The smaller varieties, also known as puppy
playpens, can also be used indoors to keep young pups from
wandering off or keep your dog in one spot while you’re busy
with something.
Other considerations Safety and security
are also major factors when you’re looking for the best pen for
your dog. The pen should be free of any sharp points or edges
and anything you dog could get its paw or, even worse, its head
stuck in.
Also make sure the pen can be firmly secured
to the ground in case your dog decides to jump at the
walls.
Portable dog pens give you an affordable and
easy way to temporarily corral your active dog or puppies. If
you’re going to be traveling a lot with your dog, look for a
pen that’s easy to completely disassemble.
If you think you’ll be using then pen mostly
around the house and yard, a lightweight collapsible pen may be
a better option.
