Maltese are wonderful little dogs. But just
because they are small in stature does it mean they are
small in will. They can be quite independent and full of
mischievous energy.
Housebreaking your Maltese is really quite easy. If
your dog is having a problem, it is possible that you are part
of the problem. And that is the good news! Because you can
read, and you can reason and with just a bit of information and
guidance your Maltese will be housebroken.
As with any dog, it is important that she
associates peeing and pooing with going outside. That
association should start immediately your puppy comes home.
A small puppy have a tiny little bladder. A
puppy also do not have very strong muscles keeping control on
that bladder, add some excitement to that and a puppy with a
full bladder can accidentally just let go, not intending to,
and presto! you have a pattern going already.
A puppy should be taken outside frequently.
Every hour or two. When she goes out do not play with her until
she has done her "job". Teach her that her designated place for
peeing and pooping is for only that. No playing or cuddling
should be associated with that place.
Just going outside is plenty exciting for a
puppy and she will want to engage you. Be strong (!!) and
withstand it until she has gone. Then the praise should be
lavish, maybe a treat, and the playing can begin.
Preventing your dog from ever going in the
house to begin with is the best course of action!
When we first got our Sheltie puppy she was
8 weeks old. We even got up during the night to take her out
for the first month or two. She never had the need to go in the
house, and thus never associated any of our rugs or floors with
peeing.
Being Dog Lovers, we are proponents of
appropriate dog training. Training that is positive and relies
on rewards and not punishing or "breaking" the dog. Daniel
Stevens author of the best selling dog training program, Sit
stay Fetch offers a free 6 day ecourse. We think it is well
worth it, and there is no obligation.
And it is free... (We like free :) )
Once you Maltese has been housebroken, you
may want to continue obedience training. Most dogs love the
training and will feel even closer to their "master" Check this
video out.
