Indestructible
Dog Beds
-Finding
The TRULY Indestructible
It you’re the owner of a large chew-happy dog,
finding truly indestructible dog beds can seem next to
impossible.
You shell out a hundred bucks for a
supposedly tough bed and your dog has it in shreds within a
week...
It may not seem like it right now, but there
really are virtually indestructible dog beds out there. It’s
just a matter of knowing what to look for.
Construction and
Material
Sometimes material you think would stand up to your dogs
chewing and digging isn’t really as strong as it seems. Cordura
or heavy-duty, luggage-grade nylon are both popular
options.
For a softer, warmer choice, one tough dog
bed material that may come as a surprise is microsuede. It’s
cozy and comfortable for you dog, but can also take a lot of
abuse. Whatever you choose, remember that cotton and polyester
just won’t cut it.
For the REALLY Rough Dog Bed
Destroyer
While there are some indestructible dog beds
made completely out of soft material, if your dog’s really
rough on things, look for a bed that’s raised off the ground on
a steel, aluminum, or poly-resin frame.
This construction makes your dog a lot less
likely to try to chew through the bed and unlikely to do much
damage even if it does try.
The filling is also something you’ll want to
consider. If your dog loves to dig before it beds down, one
option is to skip filling altogether and get your dog a mat or
hammock-style bed. If you want a filled bed, choose something
fairly tough like foam or Fiberfill rather than feather.
Some brands to consider
When it comes to tough, chew-proof dog beds, some manufactures
do better than others. Naturally, those companies that
specialize in cute furniture-like bed designs for toy breed
dogs aren’t likely to have what you’re looking for. Instead,
stick with manufacturers like Kuranda, Caddis, and Canine
Cushion, which specialize in sturdy beds for large dogs.
While no dog bed is 100% indestructible if
your dog is determined enough, there are a number of virtually
indestructible dog beds on the market that will give your pooch
many nights of good sleep before they start to show serious
wear.
