Housebreaking Yorkshire Terriers
House breaking a Yorkshire terrier can be done
in a few different ways. Due to their small size, some
prefer to not train their Yorkie to relieve themselves
outside but to go on paper in a designated place in the
house.
If you choose to
paper train your dog you can not train them to
go outside at the same time, or train them with crate
training.
Why paper train your Yorkie?
1. If you do not have
ready access to a yard or park.
2. If your schedule
leaves the dog alone for many hours at a time.
3. If you have physical
disabilites or some other reason making it hard to take the dog
out.
And, let's face it a Yorkie's bladder does
not contain that much urine. It will be easy to clean up after
the dog has used the paper. (Imagine paper training a
labrador...)
When deciding on a place to put the paper,
choose a place without carpet. The laundry room, or a corner in
the kitchen or hall way are common places.
Next, you need to associate the paper with
peeing and pooping. The area where you put the paper need to be
quite large at first, and you have to be able to restrict the
dog so she won't be able to get outside the paper. Your Yorkie
will at first pee at random on the paper, but as she does, she
is beginning to associate peeing with the feel of being on the
paper.
Slowly begin to reduce the size of the
papered area. Reduce it one sheet at a time. (Still keeping the
dog inside the area) If this is done slowly enough, the dog has
associated the paper with peeing and will urinate on the
smaller and smaller area of paper.
Everytime she goes praise her profusely! If
you catch her going outside the paper make a loud sound,
slapping your hand on the wall, clapping your hands loudly...
this may make her stop mid stream. Scoop her up quickly and put
her on the paper.
Compliment her wildly when she is done.
What to do if you find a wet spot off the
paper? Not much you can do after the fact. Punishing or
scolding the dog is totally counterproductive. She will be
confused and unhappy, not understanding what she has done to
make you upset and displeased.
